Every once in a while, you pick up a book, read it and it changes your life. This happened to me in 2008 when I saw a book called The Billionaire’s Vinegar – The Mystery of the World’s Most Expensive Bottle of Wine (true story) by Benjamin Wallace on the shelf of Barnes & Noble in Fashion Island, Newport Beach. Growing up with Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, The Famous Five by Enid Blyton and later Perry Mason novels, I guess I hadn’t outgrown my love for mystery stories!
By the time I finished the book (two days later), I saw wine in a totally different light and I was hooked. Before this, wine was just red or white for me. And I’m quite embarrassed to admit that it was something I gulped down as quickly as possible (not unlike downing a shot of whiskey) to avoid tasting it!! So, the book actually saved me and turned me into an oenophile. From then on, I bought more books on wine and with each book, my learning and interest grew exponentially.
Fast forward eighteen months (from my serendipitous experience at Barnes & Noble), Wine Story opened at Shangri-La Plaza mall. Now I don’t claim to be a wine “expert” nor do I aim to be. But at Wine Story, we are all passionate wine students. Our vision is to inspire a new generation of wine lovers in the Philippines, with a mission to raise the bar of wine enjoyment from learning, tasting, buying to storing, collecting and investing in fine wine.
One of the great rewards of wine appreciation is you get to meet some very interesting people. Unlike my friend Christian, I’m a social introvert but since discovering wine, I have met and made several fantastic friends both local and international. Wine people by and large are kind and generous. For some magic reasons, wine changes one’s personality (just like how some people change into a totally different person once they get behind the wheel!) but for the better. I guess it’s because wine is a social lubricant and one can’t really drink wine by oneself.
As in any good business, we choose our customers and we focus on top-end wines. In London, there are a thousand wine shops of various sizes, offerings and target markets within a few square miles; all fueling the interest and demand of wine lovers. With Wine Story, we also hope to see an explosion of wine shops in the Philippines in the near future and get people to love and enjoy wine as much as we do.
